Like so many people, I’ve had several burnout episodes. A lot of this is due to being a people pleaser. Being a people pleaser is one of the most unauthentic behaviors one can have. But in the last six months or so I’ve been actively working on thinking about some core beliefs differently — to avoid burnout, which to me, is also an embarrassing thing, and is why I disappear for a while. Mostly, I’ve been reminding myself that I am worth a healthy and joyful life and that it is okay if there are others around me who are upset. These are massive milestones for me and it all has taken a lot of work. Work!

Wow. That sounds like some serious progress. Well done reaching your milestones! I wish you luck on continued success!

When you mentioned people pleasing, it made me realize three things: 1) That may deserve a missive of its own 2) It should probably get a mention in “Burnout” and “Authenticity” in future revisions 3) People pleasing was my first real “hard stop” when I started working on myself.

Perhaps the most important thing I took from your comment is the idea that people pleasing is perceived as unauthentic. Clarifying the line between being authentic when caring for others and being a “people pleaser” maybe the biggest challenge of crafting that article. :)

Thank you for your thoughts!
